What is Nowcasting?


Nowcasting is a powerful technique that allows researchers to estimate the current state of an economic indicator using near-real-time data. Unlike traditional forecasting methods, which rely on lagged data, nowcasting incorporates search interest data, external sources, and advanced statistical models for a dynamic understanding of recent trends.


For instance, Gross Domestic Product (GDP) is typically reported quarterly. Still, researchers at the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) used Google Trends to nowcast GDP weekly—a groundbreaking achievement in economic monitoring.

Between 2019 and 2023, the OECD Tracker leveraged machine learning and Google Trends data to provide weekly insights into economic activity. The model analyzed search behavior across 46 countries, focusing on themes like:

This visualization explored the relationship between search trends and actual health conditions across the United States using Google Trends data and community health status indicators.

  1. Condition-Specific Analysis: Users could select from eight health conditions, such as cancer, to explore search trends.


  2. Historical Trends: A detailed chart showing search interest from 2004 to 2017 was paired with a county-level breakdown on a map.


  3. Comparison with Actual Data: The project juxtaposed search trends with mortality rates, offering valuable insights into regional health awareness and outcomes.


 

What Does the Data Reveal?


A scatter plot in the visualization highlighted the relationship between search interest and actual occurrences of health conditions across metropolitan areas. Points closer to a dashed line indicated strong correlations, while outliers invited further exploration.
